Uganda update
After many weeks of being unable to contact Uganda other than by texts due to server problems there, I have today had a really long chat with Moses at Bishop Barham University College in Kabale, via Yahoo Messenger! You may be interested to know that it is cold and rainy there too - Africa is not always hot and steamy!!!
Moses had discussed with me some while back the situation regarding a lack of water supply to his village which is situated high on a hill overlooking Kabale town. The nearest supply was from a stream many kilometres away and women and children had to fetch water with jerry cans twice daily! I was aware that TWAM (Tools With A Mission) were involved in the construction on concrete water tanks for harvesting rainwater from roofs so put Moses in touch with Robert, TWAM’s representative in Uganda, based in the capital Kampala which is a good 8 hours drive from Kabale on a rutted and pot-holed main road.
Robert has since travelled to meet Moses and his village elders to discuss their situation and I am very happy to report that progress is being made. TWAM have agreed to construct 10 tanks and carry out training although the village will have to finance the scheme. The village have to pay for lorry loads of sand and aggregate to be transported there, also for fascias to be fitted for the guttering to catch the rainwater. The tanks will be located at the 10 homes able to afford them initially, however water will be shared around the community! Most of the homes there are in poor condition so the fitting of fascias is a problem!
Above is shown a typical village type house - this one is not at the village in question but located at Kisoro where another UK based charity, “Compassion” has fitted guttering and a tank.
